ZAKAYO THE OLDEST CHIMPANZEE

Zakayo the oldest popular chimpanzee in Uganda passed away on the 26th of April 2018,Zakayo lived at the Uganda Wildlife Conservation Education in Entebbe for the past 42 years until he passed on, he was very known captive chimpanzee in the country.
A research shows that Zakayo succumbed to chronic gastroenteritis (stomach flu) this was caused due to old age, Zakayo was a type who was highly susceptible to opportunistic infections he started feeling unwell about 3 weeks before he passed on.
On the 28th of April 2018 the Uganda’s oldest chimp Zakayo’s remains were to be persevered.
On its passing on the country celebrated the life of the legendry chimpanzee which once lived a dominant male which brought up the Chimpanzee family.
Zakayo once nurtured two Alpha Male chimpanzees including Matooke in 2013 and Aluma who took over from 2013 till to date. The Uganda Wild Life Education Center held a vigil on the 4th of April at the center of the wild, beach which stared at 6pm later on the 6th of Sunday which was his burial date. Uganda conservation fraternity faced the biggest hit a blow with the death of the oldest chimpanzee.
HISTORY
Zakayo was abandoned on the 10th June of 1964in Semiliki National Park in Bundibungyo District he was raised by a white man who later on surrendered him to UWEC(Uganda Wildlife Education center)

Zakayo was abandoned on the 10th of June in 1964 in Semiliki National Park Bundibngyo District and was hand raised by a white man who surrendered him to UWEC in June 1976 when he was becoming difficulty too handle as he became aggressive and difficult to manage. He used to stay in a cage and visitors would tease him, which used to make him very excited.
In 2012 Zakayo lost his alpha Male position however he still commanded a lot of respect from group, this instilled an order and peace when there were group fights and made sure that everyone entered the enclosure or exited it before he did, this defined his caring character.
