BWINDI FOREST NATIONAL PARK

 Bwindi Forest National park, is composed of 331 square kilometer both Montane and lowland forest, the park is accessible on foot because it’s a forest. Bwindi Forest national park is a world heritage site.

‘Bwindi’ is derived from a “Runyakitara” word which means ‘Impenetrable'. This word originates from the Bamboo large forest hardwoods. The Bamboo which is thick and covered with ferns, vines giving it a reason to be accessed on foot, it’s also known as a “place of darkens” because of its dark color.

 The park is famous for the Mountain Gorillas, the 400 Mountain Gorillas left in the world, they are known as the endangered Mountain Gorillas. The endangered apes are wild and others are habituated and trained to be close to human beings. The habituated gorillas arelocated with in different sectors of Bwindi such as Rushaga,Ruhija, Nkuringo, and Buhoma.

The park is not only notable for Mountain Gorilla trekking but in this park there a number of primates including Gorilla, Chimpanzees,black and white colobus monkeys,red tailed Monkey, velvet monkeys, Lhotse’s Guenon,baboons,forest elephant,antelopes, duikers,bush pigs,Giant hogs,small cats.

Bird species such as African green broadbill and other birds include Cinnamon-chested Bee eaters,Francolin,Green Tinker bird,mountain masked and chestnut,red faced woodland,warbler,Ruwenzori Batis and white tailed fly catcher and many more.250 species of butterflies,chameleon geckos,27 species of frogs,170 tree species and  14 species of ferns.

Bwindi is discovered by most visitors who prefer Mountain Gorilla trekking and more focus on mountain gorillas but the park has other attractions and activities including hiking,Gorilla habituation,mountain biking,village walks,birding,stunning scenery and many more.
