NGAMBA ISLAND

  Ngamba Island, is a home to the orphaned Chimpanzees who were rescued from Poachers.

Ngamba Island, was established in 1998 to care for the orphaned chimpanzees that were rescued by the Uganda Wildlife Authority.

The chimpanzees were rescued to reintroduce the apes in the wild. Ngamba Island is a rainforest covered on 100acers of land and can be accessed using a boat which takes approximately 23 km drive away from the shores of Lake Victoria in Entebbe town.

The island supports a natural wildlife and a variety of natural foods for the chimpanzees. The island offers unique opportunities to view close the chimpanzees in their natural forested environment. It’s an incredible experience viewing close the relatives of humans as their behavior the same way as humans. The island is set as an eco-friendly project with rainwater collection, toilets solar energy and hot water for electricity.

There various activities at the island although the Island is famously known for chimpanzee trekking.

Forest walk.

When you visit the island you have an opportunity to experience the morning forest walk with the young ones of chimpanzees.

The walk always face to face encounter with the apes as they continue with their day to day activities as takes about as they play hide and seek, piggy back ride, catch me if you can and many more. The forest walk takes one hour and a maximum of 4 people for the chimpanzee forest walk.

Giving care.

Enjoy the unique program to have an opportunity to experience the day life of chimpanzees care giver. The day takes you through a training of preparing food, feeding and viewing how the chimpanzees are feed. Have a chance to participate in activities taking place such as research and monitoring, Medical check ups, preparing the holding area.

 The program takes place to help you understand as you appreciate what takes place at the Ngamba island sanctuary.

The staff will work with you and show you what takes place and involved during the interaction with the chimpanzees on the island, although direct contact is not allowed but only for resident caregiver.

Infant interrogation

Chimpanzees live in a community, which means any chimp needs interrogation in the group. The interrogation process of the chimpanzees as they live exemplary in their natural social system. The time taken in the interrogation depends on a variety of factors, including age, level of trauma, sex experience. The interrogation is done in 3 stages.

1. The new members getting used to the new environment.

2. getting the chimpanzees get used with each other in smaller groups.

3. Interrogating the chimpanzees with new groups in the forest.

4. Give them support by holding them and getting enclosure with infants. Help them and teach them with a company of several chimps up to the age of 9years as you have direct contact with chimpanzees.

The chimpanzee sanctuary is open all year and season round to tourist who pay their entrance                                   fee and chimpanzee trekking permits.
